Candidate reference genes with a mean stability value M < 0.5 are regarded as stably expressed [20] as indicated by a blue, dashed line. (B) Determination of the optimal number of control genes required for reliable normalization by stepwise calculating the pariwise variation (Vn/n+1) between normalization factors based on the n and (n+1) most stably expressed reference genes based on results results from (A). According to the developers of geNorm, a variation < 0.15 indicates no significant contribution of an additional control gene to the normalization factor and the optimal number of control genes as shown by a red, dashed line.
