  1. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to determine the odds ratio (OR) and 95% CI, controlling for age, gender, G6PD deficiency, sickle-cell trait status and presence of bacterial infections [10, 13, 3638]. The haplotype non-carriers were used as reference groups for the analyses in the regression analyses.
